Is Avodart (Dutasteride) Safe
Like its close chemical cousin Finasteride, Dutasteride has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a treatment for prostatic hyperplasia in men. Clinical trials have shown that the prescription medication, which is sold under the brand name Avodart, can shrink the size of an enlarged prostate and alleviate some of the symptoms associated with the condition.
But like Finasteride, also known as PROPECIA, Dutasteride has proven remarkably effective at treating another far more common condition. We are speaking of course about male pattern baldness, a problem that affects half the men on the planet.
And while Avodart has performed well in studies, unlike PROPECIA it has not been approved by the FDA as a treatment for hair loss. This leads many men who are desperately searching for a cure to ask, is Avodart safe ?
As we explained earlier, Finasteride and Dutasteride are chemical cousins that are used to treat the same conditions and have exhibited the same side effects in clinical trials when used to treat prostatic hyperplasia. So, it stands to reason that they would have similar side effects when used on alopecia.
What are the side effects? Well, none of them are dangerous. But since both drugs reduce levels of DHT, which is a type of testosterone that scientists believe causes hair loss, they may have an effect on your performance in the bedroom. Specifically, users of the drugs have complained of decreased libido and occasional impotence.
